Professional Work

Institute & Faculty of Actuaries
  • Pensions Guidance Committee
  • Current Issues Committee
  • Damages Working Group
  • Faculty Council
Association of Consulting Actuaries
  • Damages Reversions & Divorce Committee (Chairman)
  • SSAS Committee
Previous contributor to, National Association of Pension Funds, Pension Management Institute, Society of Pension Consultants, the Association of Pension Lawyers, Knowledge Sharing Scotland and The Pensions Advisory Service.

Wider experience:
  • Adviser to the Social Security Committee. In 1997-98 I advised the (select) committee on the new legislation on pensions and divorce. This involved direct experience of the parliamentary process, political debate, lobby power and access to the House of Commons.
  • Investment; As technical adviser to Consensus Research International, I was co-author of the DWP Research Report 195 which involved case study research into the implementation of the Myners Principles. Extensive work in 2002 and 2003 involved in depth reviews of a very large range of public and private sector schemes. A perspective was gained from all stakeholders - managers, consultants, trustees and employers.
  • Independent trusteeship. Following 1990 legislation, I initiated, developed and ran this non-actuarial function at Hymans Robertson. This involved “switching hats” from being an adviser to the responsible decision maker – communications and employee counselling were priorities. ACMCA Limited now looks after over a dozen schemes ranging in size from £3m to £800m.
  • FRS17. In PwC I positioned myself as a technical expert to ensure maximum exposure to the new regime through work for the ASB and the accounting and actuarial professions. Numerous speaking engagements ensured new work and appropriate colleague introductions.
  • In 2006 ACMCA Limited petitioned the Court of Session for the liquidation of a former major engineering employer. This second insolvency event was a necessary requirement for the consideration of a winding up pension scheme entering the Pension Protection Fund (PPF).
  • In September 2006 I signed one of the first three S143 actuarial valuation reports which allowed the scheme to transfer to the PPF which resulted in significantly increased benefits for members.
